Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta is an option for Real Madrid this summer as they eye up another free transfer like David Alaba.

That’s according to El Español, who say that Azpilicueta is a name that has ‘come up’ for the Spanish giants and he is ‘already an option’.

Madrid ‘found a treasure’ last summer when they managed to sign David Alaba on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, and that is something they are looking to repeat.

It’s why they’ve been so heavily linked with Rudiger, whose deal with Chelsea is expiring, and now Azpilicueta, whose contract is also coming to an end, is also a potential option.

It had been felt at Chelsea that signing both players to new deals would be ‘straightforward’, but that is not proving to be the case, and now both players could leave on a free in the summer.

Azpilicueta, for his part, is at the ‘zenith’ of his career after winning the Champions League last season and being a ‘protagonist’ in that success.

His versatility is a big plus point, but his availability on a free is what really attracts those in charge at the Bernabeu.

They would not consider signing him if they had to pay, but the zero cost involved and their need to sign a right-back means he’s an option they’re looking at.

They’ve been linked with several options to solve the issue, but the Chelsea man would be an option of ‘experience and consummate quality’.

His versatility would give the coaching options more options, and the fact he’s back in the Spain set-up is valued as well.

Thus, his arrival at the Bernabeu is a possibility, although it is a distant one at this point.
