Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has offered to pay for the flights to Middlesbrough for the Blues upcoming FA Cup clash.
That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who say that Azpilicueta joined teammate Kai Havertz in offering to pay for the trip.
Chelsea find themselves in the awkward position of being limited of what they can spend on travel costs for fixtures after owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government.
Those rules stated that the club cannot spend more than £20,000 on travel for games, a figure which is proving to be a major issue for a club with commitments abroad in Europe.
Even domestically, it is causing an issue, with Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel revealing this week that they could not afford the flight for his team and staff to Middlesbrough.
That’s apparently led to a spark of offers in the Blues squad, with Havertz said to have offered to pay and Mundo Deportivo now saying Azpilicueta ‘offered to do so’ too.
The newspaper insists that at this moment in time the offer has not been accepted and the club are ‘working to find a different solution’ before Friday.
If not, it seems Azpilicueta and his teammates could be paying for them to fly to the North East out of their own pockets.
