Dropping Kepa Arrizabalaga at the weekend for Willy Caballero, Frank Lampard sent a strong message to the Spanish goalkeeper that his future at Stamford Bridge was in doubt.
The 25-year-old cost Chelsea £72m back in the summer of 2018, and while he performed well in his first season, the 2019-20 campaign has been far from his best, conceding 32 goals in 24 Premier League game and keeping just five clean sheets.
With that in mind, it’s no surprise to see Lampard and co. start a new search for a shot stopper ahead of the summer window, and Eurosport’s Manu Lonjon reported late on Monday evening they already have a name in mind.
That player is Lille’s Mike Maignan, who has been in fine form for the Ligue 1 side for the past couple fo years, with the journalist explaining Chelsea have ‘supervised him for many months’.
In fact, he is said to be the Stamford Bridge staff’s ‘priority for this summer’.
If that is indeed the case, then Kepa might find himself in a situation where a new club will need to be found next summer, and with a strong chance of Chelsea wanting most of their money back, it will be interesting to see who will be willing to cough up such money for him.
