Édouard Mendy signing for Chelsea is only a ‘matter of time’, report Ouest France in their Saturday edition.

The goalkeeper missed Rennes training on Friday and was seen leaving the club’s base with his agent. Naturally, that saw claims he was on his way for a medical to join the Premier League club, yet Rennes have insisted there’s another reason.

Julien Stéphan, the French club’s manager, said Mendy had picked up a small injury which required 48 hours of rest, meaning he couldn’t train and wouldn’t be available for Sunday’s match against Nimes.

Not many people bought the story, and Ouest France state that after Chelsea made a ‘very attractive offer’ of €28m, the transfer looks to be close.

Rennes now have to find themselves a replacement, and may want to get far down the road with that before allowing Chelsea to announce Mendy’s move.

They like Granada’s Rui Silva, but with clubs now knowing Rennes will receive around €28m for their goalkeeper, they’re bound to push for as high a price as possible for their own.
