Despite still being out following a rupture in his cruciate ligament, Davide Zappacosta appears to be the one loanee at AS Roma who could stay on beyond the current season.
What plays in his favour is his age (he’s still only 27) and the fact Chelsea are indifferent about his future, as Frank Lampard appears to have no interest in using the former Torino man at Stamford Bridge.
Corriere dello Sport dedicated a few column inches to the full-back’s situation in Rome on Sunday, explaining the possibility of his current loan deal being extended ‘isn’t to be excluded’.
A lot will depend on how Zappacosta fares once he fully returns from his injury until the end of the season, and we’ll see more about that in around three weeks time.
Over in London, it’s stated Chelsea have ‘nothing against leaving him in Rome’, while the defender, whom Paulo Fonseca ‘considers the starter on the right hand side’, is ‘pushing to stay’.
That means there is a good chance Zappacosta could remain in Serie A next year, and with a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2022, he may never return to London.
After all, if he stays injury free next year, there’s a good chance someone will want to buy him as he’ll only have a season left on his deal.
