Italian website Calcio Mercato has a story claiming Chelsea and Liverpool would both be interested in Napoli left-back Faouzi Ghoulam.
The 26-year-old has been linked to a couple of Premier League clubs in the past few seasons, so the story isn’t absurd. Problem is that if you take a closer look, there aren’t any reasons to believe it.
Calcio Mercato credit the info to an Algerian website called ‘Equipe d’Algerie’. As most of the transfer rumours come from Europe, it’s always interesting when there’s news from Africa, so we took a look.
But there’s no such website called Equipe d’Algerie, even because in French, it obviously means the Algerian national team.
There’s actually an outlet called Le Buteur, which has a category called Equipe d’Algerie, where they follow the national team players, and that’s where they cover the story about Liverpool and Chelsea.
Despite giving many details about a potential chase, they show the original source actually comes from Italy, as it was first reported by Mundo Napoli.
But what the Italian website actually said is that Chelsea and Liverpool ‘already showed a strong interest’ and ‘should not be ruled out’.
So there isn’t something new in the story, which is actually about a contract renewal, and was first reported by… Calcio Mercato.
Slow news day, folks.
