At the start of the week, when Sporting had a general meeting with its council, president Frederico Varandas was asked if there were talks with Chelsea for a takeover, and said no.

The club chief claimed they only spoke about the transfer of Manuel Ugarte, despite all the rumours.

It turns out that Portuguese newspaper A Bola today features a story claiming Chelsea ‘don’t give up’ on buying Sporting.

They say that even though Varandas denied the talks, they know that the Blues are still ‘very interested’ in acquiring a Portuguese club, and the Lions are their favourite option.

Sporting are currently sorting out their financial situation and it’s said the only way Chelsea could work their way into the club would be by becoming major investors there.

Todd Boehly’s idea would be to do something similar to Manchester City, who have clubs around the globe and can capture and loan players every window.

Sporting aren’t very interested in that type of business, but according to A Bola, Chelsea insist on being their partners, especially for everything the Lions represent.
