Chelsea and Atlético Madrid are interested in signing RC Lens’ Jonathan Clauss, according to La Voix du Nord.

Operating mainly as a right wing-back, he managed five goals and 11 assists from 37 league games last season.

The 29-year-old’s deal expires in 2023 and he’s decided not to sign an extension with the Ligue 1 side.

Diego Simeone’s side looked at the France international in January and he is still on their agenda. Chelsea would be keen to sign him as they have been following the player for a year.

The Blues ‘tick all the boxes’ because of several factors. The west London club are competing for the Champions League, playing in a very physical league and the system employed by Thomas Tuchel [three at the back] suits him.

In addition to this, César Azpilicueta is rumoured to be leaving Chelsea and if that happens, Clauss could have a better chance of playing regularly at Stamford Bridge.

Lens ‘want at least €10m’ to part ways with their player. The report explains an offer of around €7-8m, plus bonuses, would make it difficult for the French club to retain Clauss,  due to the time left on his current deal.

The Frenchman’s choice for the future depends on him getting playing time in the first half of the 2022/23 season.

This will be the wing-back’s priority as it is crucial for his hopes of making it to the Qatar World Cup with France, even though his place in the national team would still not be guaranteed.
