Chelsea are seriously working to sign Gavi from from Barcelona, according to Tuesday’s AS.
The 18-year-old came through the ranks of the La Liga side’s academy and made his way into their first team in August 2021. His youth team deal was set to expire at the end of this season.
Gavi’s displays since the start of last season convinced Barca to renew his contract until 2026, which hasn’t been approved by La Liga, due to the club’s finances. As it stands, he could be released as a free agent in the summer and Chelsea want to take advantage of this to carry out a shock deal.
Efforts to make that happen are already underway. Blues representatives met the Spain international’s agent, Iván De la Peña, in Madrid three weeks ago.
Chelsea sporting director Christopher Vivell led their delegation and wanted to convey to the teenager his side’s wish to sign him and the key role he would have in their project.
The first meeting in Madrid was ‘very satisfactory’ and the two parties have agreed to continue ‘moving forward’ for the potential deal in the summer. It’s further claimed a new meeting is expected to take place soon to outline the operation in more detail.
Apart from a contract offer, Chelsea are also ready to offer Gavi ‘significant’ signing on bonuses, if he were to arrive as a free agent.
Gavi, for his part, isn’t happy with the manner in which Barca have handled his contract situation, and doesn’t feel his case is being given enough importance.
