Didi Hamann has backed new Chelsea duo Kai Havertz and Timo Werner to ‘assert themselves’ in the Premier League following their moves from Germany.

The German pair have swapped the Bundesliga for England this season, completing big-money moves from Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig respectively.

Both were star players for their clubs in Germany last season, managing 52 goals and 22 assists between them.

It is that red-hot form that has tempted Chelsea into paying hefty fees for both of them, with Frank Lampard adding goals and creativity to his side.

Whether the pair can adapt to life in the Premier League remains to be seen though, with numerous players down the years struggling to adapt to the extra physicality and pace.

Hamann is one player who did it successfully during his career, having swapped Bayern Munich for Newcastle in 1998 before going on to have successful spells with Liverpool and Manchester City as well.

And he is convinced the new Chelsea stars can adapt, claiming he has ‘no doubt’ that both of his compatriots will enjoy success at Stamford Bridge.

“I trust both of them to find their way around quickly and assert themselves,” he wrote in his column for Sky Sports Germany.

“It’s not so much the way the game is played but the mentality that counts. You must be prepared to accept the game.

“The sooner you understand that, the sooner you adapt and perform. There will be some tackles where you are probably waiting for the whistle to blow, but it won’t come.

“Then you have to get up and then it will go on. The fact that they both take the step at a relatively young age shows me that they are absolutely looking for the challenge.

“It might have been a little less tough for Havertz in Spain. In terms of character, I think both of them are capable of it.

“Werner coped very well with the situation after the diving accusations. Back then, he showed that he had grown up. I have no doubt that both of them will succeed.”
