On August 24th, Sport Witness reported a move to either Manchester United or Chelsea is a ‘possibility’ for Saúl Ñíguez.
A day later, we relayed news from Spain that Chelsea ‘insist’ on signing the Atlético Madrid player before the window closes.
The midfielder, who has been used as a left-back this season, has been wanting to leave the La Liga winners since he won the title last season.
However, no club have triggered his €150m release clause nor decided to meet the €50m price tag set by Los Rojiblancos.
Marca looks at the recent claims of the Champions League winners and the Red Devils wanting the 26-year-old and say the Blues have the ‘most interest’ to sign him.
It’s claimed the Spain international’s fate could be at the west London club after Thomas Tuchel’s side ‘re-emerged’ as an option, at a time when his potential exit from Atlético seemed to be crushed.
The report adds that it remains to be seen whether ‘Chelsea’s bet is real and if any movement ends up being made’ in the coming days.
AS on Friday also have an update on Chelsea’s interest in Saúl.
They say the Premier League side’s formula [same as Álvaro Morata’s loan move to Juventus] is to take the player on loan, while paying his full salary during his temporary stay at the club.
Chelsea would also have to pay a loan fee to Diego Simeone’ side and the deal will come with an ‘obligation’ to make the transfer permanent.
To be clear, Marca don’t sound hugely hopeful about Saúl getting the move he wants.
