Chelsea will be given a second shot at Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez in the summer, with Ajax promising the Mexican he can leave.

That’s according to De Telegraaf, who say the Dutch side are already targeting a replacement in Tijani Reijnders as they gear up for Alvarez to leave.

The newspaper explains that Ajax are ‘making headway’ on the signing of the AZ Alkmaar midfielder as they gear up to lose Alvarez at the end of the season.

The ‘serious interest’ in Reijnders is seen as Ajax ‘sorting’ themselves out for the summer when they expect Alvarez to depart.

They have ‘promised’ the midfielder that they will cooperate on any transfer in the event that a club shows interest and makes the ‘right offer’ for him.

That promise came after they rejected a €50m offer from Chelsea for him, when they decided to hold him to his contract after both Antony and Lisandro Martinez had been allowed to move to the Premier League.

Whether Chelsea will move again in the summer remains to be seen, having failed to do so in January when they continued their spending spree.

They spent their money on Enzo Fernandez in that window but it has been reported that they were willing to spend as much as €60m on him, which is an indicator of the strength of their interest.

They will now be given a second shot at a deal, with Ajax promising Alvarez he can leave and already lining up his replacement and the player also confirming he wants out.

“I came to Ajax to learn, enjoy and reach the next level,” Soccer News report him saying.

“Of course my focus is one hundred percent on Ajax at the moment. But if something nice comes along next summer that is good for Ajax and for me, then I want to seize that opportunity.”
