Recruiting the likes of Sofiane Boufal late on in the transfer window, Angers SCO came out on the other end with some players they never expected to sign.

Their manager, Stéphane Moulin, said as much after the acquisition of the Moroccan, and there’s another big name they could have picked up in the form of Danny Drinkwater.

The midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Aston Villa, doesn’t appear to be in Frank Lampard’s plans, and with a contract keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2022, a temporary exit this window would have helped.

That never materialised, and the 30-year-old ended up staying put, but the option to join Angers was there at one point, and he would have been open to it.

That’s what L’Equipe are reporting on Wednesday, explaining the midfielder was ‘offered’ to the Ligue 1 side, and ‘he wasn’t against a spell’ in France’s top-tier, telling as much to ‘some of his French teammates’.

However, Angers, who were ‘concerned about’ having French speaking players in key roles, ‘didn’t go further in exploring the deal’.
