On Saturday, we covered claims made by journalist Gerard Romero that Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen has already passed his medical with Barcelona. Romero also stated the Blues star’s agent is expected to arrive in Spain next week to seal the deal.
The centre-back’s contract expires in June and he’s refused to sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge.
Bayern Munich are also been credited with an interest in the 25-year-old, who has been a vital figure in the west London club’s defence under Thomas Tuchel’s orders. However, he has reportedly made a decision to join the La Liga side.
The Denmark international’s decision to leave the Champions League winners for a club that is currently in the Europa League hasn’t pleased his compatriot, Niels Christian Frederiksen.
“It is always great to switch to FC Barcelona, and normal circumstances also a step up, but as times are – when you switch from the Champions League winners to FC Barcelona, which is not the FC Barcelona we have known about the last 20-25 years – I would say that it is a step down,” the football commentator told TV3 Sport, relayed by Tipsbladet.
“And it is also in relation to the fact that La Liga is not at all on par with the Premier League, which is the world’s best league.”
Niels Christian Frederiksen has urged Christensen to reconsider his decision to make a switch to the Camp Nou in the summer, in order to continue at Chelsea beyond this term.
“Andreas Christensen is a skilled player who has developed a lot. From being out under Frank Lampard to having a big role on the team under Thomas Tuchel, and a role that I would predict would be extended in the coming years, as he is still a young man,” he said.
“That way I regret that he switches to Barcelona. Having said that, I have no doubt that he will be a great success in Barcelona. He has all the qualities to play there, he is strong, good at reading the game, fairly fast, and then, above all, he is strong and calm on the ball.
“So, he looks like a real Barcelona defender and Barcelona will be happy for him and he will also be happy for the climate, although it is not bad in London either.
“Personally, I think he was in a good gang, and he should have stayed at Chelsea. Chelsea are a better team than FC Barcelona, and it is also a bigger club.”
