It was bound to happen following the success Fikayo Tomori has had at Milan: Chelsea have made a terrible mistake.

That’s what Gazzetta dello Sport are claiming on Wednesday, looking at the San Siro side ahead of Thursday’s clash against Manchester United, explaining his current manager, Stefano Pioli, has been impressed with him since his arrival.

The Chelsea loanee’s performances ‘against Roma and Napoli have brought the personality of a potential champion into focus’, before adding ‘it is no coincidence that in London, they already regret it’.

A decision from the Frank Lampard era, letting Tomori go on loan made sense at the time due to his lack of game time, but few will have expected how quickly he would take to Italian football, and now there’s a feeling that the €28m redemption clause might be considered a bargain.

For Milan, it’s still a tall order considering their finances, but they are ‘thinking about’ triggering it at the end of the season, with both the club’s owners and the staff ‘willing to complete’ the deal if they can.

At this rate, it would be a shock if Tomori didn’t leave Stamford Bridge for good, unless, of course, he decides to reject the opportunity to make a name for himself at Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel.

It could all depend on what the German manager has planned for him.
