Despite Manchester United’s poor form this season, it’s probably fair to say that David De Gea isn’t one of those being majorly blamed for the disappointing results.
The goalkeeper has been managing to stay at a reasonable level, perhaps even better than in the past few years, giving Dean Henderson no much chance of getting his place.
That’s why it was a little strange to see Spain manager Luis Enrique leaving De Gea out of the national team squad this week. For the position, the boss preferred Unai Simon, David Raya and Robert Sanchez.
The local media has, of course, been talking about that absence. And for Marca, the reason is pretty clear: La Furia are now coming up with a new cycle of goalkeepers, and the time for the Manchester United star looks over.
The outlet recalls when Vicente Del Bosque did the same with Iker Casillas. By that time, however, there was a ‘sweet transition’, with the Real Madrid legend losing his place little by little.
Now since De Gea hasn’t shown a great level for Spain in recent tournaments, he ‘lost the confidence from supporters’, and even though he had the manager’s trust, this seems to be the end of the line. They explain that with new goalkeepers showing up in the squad, it was time to let him go.
‘Now, in a good moment of form, he loses his place in La Roja and it is inevitable to think that the change of cycle has also come to him in a not so sweet transition,’ Marca writes.
