For the past week or so, reports coming out of the South American media have mentioned Manchester City being interested in River Plate’s Enzo Fernández.
The Premier League winners have already done business with the Argentine side earlier this year, when they agreed a deal with them for Julián Álvarez in January. The forward rejoined them on a loan deal at least until the end of this season.
Like Álvarez, Fernández also came through the ranks of River Plate’s youth system before he was promoted to the senior team. Operating in the middle of the pitch, he has three goals and three assists from 10 matches in all competitions this season.
His contract runs down in 2025 and it has a €20m release clause. The 21-year-old’s form for the Buenos Aires club has seen him linked to Pep Guardiola’s side.
Earlier reports have also suggested the City Football Group could offer New York City FC’s Valentín Castellanos to River Plate in exchange.
However, these claims have now been dismissed by Olé. The CFG ‘denied’ Fernández is ‘for now on any list of interest’ for the English champions.
This report should also rule out any potential swap deal involving the River Plate player and Castellanos.
