Georgios Giakoumakis scored 26 goals and managed one assist in 30 Eredivisie matches for VVV-Venlo last season, but it wasn’t sufficient for the club to avoid relegation from the top flight.
The striker’s form attracted interest from Celtic and Werder Bremen, and the Hoops wanting to sign him was confirmed by his agent and the Dutch club’s director last week.
Werder head of football Clemens Fritz revealed the 26-year-old made a trip to Bremen last week to visit their facilities and there was a belief this could favour the German club.
Wednesday’s edition of De Telegraaf claims Werder Bremen have dropped out of the race to sign the Greece international and they have now shifted their focus to Hannover 96’s Marvin Duksch.
This has helped Celtic get in the driving seat to land the goalscoring frontman and the report adds the Bhoys are ‘willing to meet’ the financial demands set by VVV-Venlo, so that the player’s transfer can materialise.
De Telegraaf, however, don’t mention the fee Celtic need to pay VVV-Venlo so they let go of Giakoumakis before the window closes.
