This week, we’ve all seen all the controversy regarding the kit that Atlético Madrid will use in the next Champions League clash against Celtic.
The Spanish club are set to wear a red shirt against Brendan Rodgers’ side to remember a match from 1974 against Celtic, which turned out to be quite violent at the time.
Following all the noise made about a potential provocation from Atlético Madrid, club captain Koke is now quoted by AS speaking about the issue.
The midfielder said he’s just glad to make that reference to the match against Celtic from nearly 50 years ago, and doesn’t mind all the controversy around it, saying he’s more focused on tomorrow’s game.
“I have not been asked much by my colleagues. It’s a nice gesture from the club to our players. You are going to value us for what we do and not for what they did 50 years ago, which was a very nice thing for the club,” said Koke in a press conference.
“It’s a nice initiative from the club. It’s a match from 50 years ago, some players have travelled with us and played in it. It doesn’t mean anything beyond football, this is a different match, that has nothing to do with football. We will be judged by what we do in the match, whether we wear the red, the red and white or the blue and white. We are focused on the match.”
As Celtic debate whether Atlético Madrid’s chioce is offensive or not, they must be focused on finding a positive result, as they’re still to gain a single point in the Champions League this season.
Following the defeats to Lazio and Feyenoord, Celtic now need a win to stay alive in the competition and fight for, at least, a place in the Europa League.
