Marseille’s big noise at the beginning of the summer about recruiting a big name striker is haunting them. A flurry of leaks to the French media led fans to expect an exciting striker signed, but it hasn’t happened yet.
Valère Germain arrived from AS Monaco, and although a good signing he’s not the blockbuster Marseille have been planning for. Celtic’s Moussa Dembele has repeatedly been brought into the equation, and now Leicester City’s Islam Slimani can join him.
A track to sign Dembele from Celtic remains ‘active’ report L’Equipe, and that’s been the case for some time. Dembele has repeatedly been linked with a Celtic exit this summer, but with less than a week left of the window Brendan Rodgers still has his man.
L’Equipe claim Slimani is the latest option, the player’s agents are said to be involved, and the interest is real. The problem for Marseille is that despite the player not fitting into his manager’s plans, Leicester aren’t eager to get him off the books, so a transfer would take a real effort.
That’s just the same as getting Dembele from Celtic then, and Marseille have learned the lesson that bragging about signing a big name striker can lead to a costly outcome or egg on face.
Stevan Jovetic and Divock Origi are other options who join the Celtic and Leicester strikers, and with just a few days left, Marseille need to back up their earlier leaks.
