On Wednesday, it was reported that Celtic had taken a strong interest in Toulouse’s Christopher Jullien, suggesting Neil Lennon and co. were after a towering centre-back to reinforce his defence.

With this in mind, it isn’t all that surprising to learn, thanks to Goal France, that the Scottish Premiership champions were among those taking a closer look at Nantes youngster Nathan Gassama.

The website explains Celtic, as well as Southampton and Chelsea, have all scouted the 18-year-old this season, while Watford have made the first move by contacting FC Nantes about their defender.

Just over 6’3”, Gassama is described as having an ‘impressive physique’ as well as being good at playing out of the back, two traits that suit a club like the Saints down to a T.

Mostly relying on Jan Bednarek and Jannik Vestergaard for much of his time in charge, Ralph Hassenhuttl was forced to turn to Jack Stephens for the last five games, during which the team failed to pick up a win.

However, with neither Celtic nor Southampton making a move for the defender just yet, their interest might have been just that… interest.

Perhaps Watford making the first move will kick them into gear?
