Celtic fullback Emilio Izaguirre wasn’t very happy with the result of the friendly match between Chile and Honduras this week.
With the referee giving La Roja three penalties which had a big influence in their 4-1 win, players from the away side were annoyed to say the least.
Izaguirre has posted a story on Instagram with picture proof to back up how well positioned the referee was for one of the ‘unfair’ penalties. He’s written: ‘What bad refereeing, painful to lose like this, three penalties, two never were’.
Interestingly, Izaguirre ended up being supported by the Honduran media. Outlet Heraldo writes that “The result does not reflect what happened on the pitch, hence the unhappiness of the player.”
Diez also agrees with the Celtic player: “The bad refereeing developed by the Peruvian Michael Espinoza caused the result to be questioned because he whistled two non-existent penalties in favour of the Chileans and did not send off left-back Jean Beausejour for a violent foul against Alberth Elis.”
Despite being a regular starter for Honduras, Izaguirre has been struggling to find a place at Celtic, where he only has three appearances this season, none of them in the Scottish Premiership.
