Over the past few days, there was a big claim in Italy that Celtic had placed a bid for Sampdoria’s Omar Colley.

That was instantly denied by Neil Lennon, who is likely to be well informed on what his club are doing on the recruitment side of things, and it’s since been backed up by Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday.

The Italian newspaper look at the Gambian defender’s situation and explain he is likely to leave the Serie A club this summer, but they’re not sure where.

They reiterate that West Ham made an enquiry a while back, and ‘it’s not a mystery’ the Premier League is a ‘welcome destination’ for the defender.

However, they also add Southampton are on the case, and then explain Celtic have also ‘set eyes’ on him to bolster their backline.

Regardless of who is interested (Rennes in Ligue 1 too), there have yet to be any offers for the 27-year-old, and any talks for a transfer are ‘in the embryonic stage’ i.e. they haven’t gone very far as of yet.

There’s no mention of how much Sampdoria would want for Colley but Gazzetta do remind their readers how important he has been to the club over the years, turning a hefty initial investment (by their standards) of £7.2m into a ‘real bargain’.

That’s why so many clubs are after him, and he certainly would represent a good move if those in charge at Parkhead manage to pull it off.
