Celtic’s Luis Palma joined Olympiacos on loan in the winter market after Brendan Rodgers’ decision to not utilise him regularly at Celtic Park.

The temporary move has helped him feature regularly as he’s played 320 minutes from six games. He’s managed a goal and an assist, and it came in Olympiacos’ 6-0 win over AEK Athens in the cup tie.

Sportime claim the Celtic player came close to joining AEK Athens in the summer of 2023 .

The winger had a spell in Greece with Aris Saloniki for 18 months before joining Celtic in August 2023.

Prior to joining the Scottish champions, the 24-year-old came close to securing a move to AEK Athens. Dimitrios Melissanidis was then the owner of the club and the report states he had ‘closed’ the transfer.

The operation was so advanced that the Honduras international found a house in Athens and was waiting to sign the contract. The move didn’t take place because the Greek club’s manager, Matías Almeyda, blocked it.

Sportime state it’s still not clear as to why Almeyda was against the Honduran’s signing.

Palma’s goal and an assist in the first leg of semi-final tie against Athens has helped his side get closer to the final. The report states his performance also saw the Celtic owned man make Almeyda ‘regret his mistake’.

Almeyda’s decision allowed Celtic to sign Palma in 2023.
