Celtic are now ‘closer’ to signing Benfica midfielder Paulo Bernardo.

That’s today reported by Portuguese newspaper Record, who feature a very optimistic update about this chase.

The outlet writes that the process has ‘advanced’, and the player is preparing to fly to Scotland in the ‘coming hours’.

Celtic are set to sign Bernardo on a loan, and the deal could still include a buying option.

Record recall a similar deal between the Eagles and the Hoops. That’s when Jota moved to Glasgow on loan, with the Scottish side having the opportunity to buy him for €7.5m.

Needless to say, Celtic have just sold the player for a lot more, so it may feel attractive to get a similar deal now.

Paulo Bernardo wasn’t expected to have a place in Benfica’s team this season, and that’s why they’re happy to let him move to Celtic. Record say the clubs managed to ‘come together again’, and it shouldn’t take long until the transfer is made official.

The 21-year-old has 26 appearances for the Eagles’ first team, and despite a €100m release clause, he’s valued by Transfermarkt at €3m.
