Leeds United co-owner Massimo Cellino can now press ahead with purchasing Brescia after the club this week secured their Sere B status for next season. Cellino has been linked with the Italian side in recent months, but it’s looking likely he will need to sell his stake in Leeds United before returning to Italy.
Brescia narrowly missed out on the relegation playoff spot, and dropping down to Lega Pro would have put serious doubts on Cellino buying a stake in the club. The Leeds United chief has a plan to get the club into Serie A within two years, but this wouldn’t have been feasible with relegation.
Speaking after Thursday’s game, Brescia manage Gigi Cagni said they will now go away to have a rest and then return to see what the future of the club is.
“For the future we will see in time. For now we detach from everything and go away for a few days to rest by the sea. Then we will see what to do. ”
Before Cellino purchases Brescia he needs to sell his remaining 50% share in Leeds United, with recent reports this could be done in a matter of weeks.
However, this week there were claims in the Italian media the deal isn’t so straightforward, and Cellino’s plans to buy into Brescia may have to be delayed until the future of Leeds United is sorted.
