Barcelona haven’t enjoyed the best of times this season and there’s been reports of uncertainty over Ernesto Valverde’s future.

Flamengo’s Jorge Jesus, who guided the Brazilian club to league and Copa Libertadores success has recently been identified as a target for the Blaugrana.

Mundo Deportivo’s Miguel Rico claims Barca have ruled out Jesus’ appointment, not just because of his age (65), but also because of his style of football.

Valverde signed a one-year extension in February, which had an option to further extend it by a year, meaning he could be at the club until 2021.

Both parties must make a decision by next March, on whether or not they want to extend their association beyond this season. Rico states Barca must be ‘careful with this’ because there’s a ‘problem’.

Josep Maria Bartomeu’s term ends in 2021 and if the club and Valverde decide to extend, then the latter will be Bartomeu’s last manager of his current presidential term.

The question is which coach would want to sign for a club for only a year (because of the presidential elections in 2021) and if Bartomeu is willing to take the risk of appointing a new coach who could jeopardise his chances of being re-elected.
