Davy Klaassen this season won his first league title since 2014, once again with his first professional club Ajax.

The Dutch sport media see it as something of a redemption for the midfielder after his failed move to Everton, and then further struggles, although not of the same level, at Werder Bremen.

Moving to Everton in 2017, a lot was expected of the Dutchman, yet he wasn’t able to show he was deserving of more chances than he got, and the exit of Ronald Koeman more or less signalled the end of his career with the Toffees.

Since then, Klaassen has spoken repeatedly about his difficult spell with Everton, and it’s also a favourite topic for the Dutch media. Therefore, with De Telegraaf interviewing him this week, it was inevitable the topic would come up.

The double winner was quizzed on his struggles outside of the Eredivisie, compared to his success in the Netherlands, and is quoted as saying: “Ultimately, every player wants to go abroad. But many players who have left Ajax and who speak afterwards say that it was not better or more fun elsewhere. It can be a lesson for the young boys that they really have to show something at Ajax before they leave.”

Now 28-years-of-age, there’s a good chance Klaassen will finish his career where he started, obviously wary of what lies beyond the borders.
