Even though Manchester City spent the summer window being linked to the likes of Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo, Pep Guardiola’s side ended up not signing a striker.

Despite the huge fee spent on the transfer of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa, it’s fair to say the Citizens didn’t complete their business.

Despite that, Manchester City stay firm in the fight for the Premier League title, now on top of the table after 15 fixtures. And in an interview with ESPN Brasil, Ederson explains that the lack of a world class striker isn’t a problem for their squad.

Speaking to reporter João Castelo-Branco about the issue, the goalkeeper sees it as a good factor that all the players at the club can share the same level of pressure, as it’d have been different if a big name had arrived.

“Our team is doing very well, there are many players scoring goals, too. So that doesn’t end up being remembered very much,” Ederson told ESPN Brasil.

“But when you take a game where the team draws or loses, we end up not being able to score any goals, then the striker subject always comes up. This is normal, it’s always when there is a game that the team cannot score goals or win, this question will come out about a striker. But I think our team is doing well the way it is.

“Of course there was a lot of speculation and a lot of hope on the part of the fans that a strong name could come, but the team remained calm the entire time. Working, dedicating ourselves as much as possible. I think the team is more important than the one player with a great individual name. So I think the collective is much stronger than a player.

“It can also be an advantage, the pressure is divided for everyone on equal terms. Of course if there were some big names here now, properly those that you mentioned, the pressure on him would be much greater than for the rest of the group. So I think that’s an important factor for us too. We have great players, but none at such a high level in the world. I think the most important thing is that the team is fine, it’s compact, so I think that was good for us too.”
