Things weren’t all bad for Pierre-Michel Lasogga at Hamburg before his loan to Leeds United. It all started off very well, with a loan, and Lasogga impressed so much that he was signed permanently on a bumper contract… something HSV now deeply regret.

Even as things were going wrong there was still the odd moment of brightness, a crucial goal, and Lasogga has done enough to leave something of a mark at Hamburg on the pitch as well as on the finances.

Back in May, with Hamburg traditionally fighting relegation, the club were playing Schalke and needed a hero, so the Leeds United loan striker stepped forward.

Scoring in injury time, Lasogga rescued a draw which was important in Hamburg avoiding the drop to the German second division.

Not so long after, he was forced out of the club and sent to Leeds. But on that day in May Lasogga was a hero, and, ahead of HSV facing Schalke again, the goal is again in focus.

Bild have been speaking to HSV’s Kyriakos Papadopoulos, who is now at Hamburg but was previously a Schalke player. Asked about the last match, it’s the Leeds striker who sticks out.

With HSV desperately needing a point, they were trailing 1-0 when the 90 minutes was up, but “Then came Lasogga and got the ball over the line to equalise. I will never forget that.”

There’s a hero deep down in Lasogga, it’s a just a case of Leeds United getting it out of him often enough.
