Today Brendan Rodgers takes his Celtic team to Ibrox, and waiting for him will be Pedro Caixinha. The Rangers manager is still settling in to his new Glasgow life but seems to already have the hang of local rivalries.
Rangers and Celtic still receive media attention around the football world, although not as much as they once did. Caixinha’s appointment to lead the Ibrox team has brought greater focus on the Glasgow rivalry in Portugal, and they like to have a man in the fight.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola have been speaking to Caixinha ahead of his match-up with Rodgers and they wanted to know how the Glasgow rivalry stands right now: “The gap between us and Celtic is still great. I have a squad that came from a transition era, a scaling down. And Celtic have won the last six championships.
“Rangers have a record of nine consecutive titles: the supporters sing ‘nine in a row’ to provoke Celtic, who now, on half a dozen, chant ten in a row, where they want to go! I’m
here to stop this from happening.”
It certainly sounds like Caixinha is determined to knock Celtic and Rodgers off their perch. A good result at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership today would be a step in the right direction.
The Glasgow sides last met a week ago, with Callum McGregor scoring the first, before Scott Sinclair converted a penalty after a foul from James Tavernier.
