Jadon Sancho signed for Borussia Dortmund in August 2017 for a fee of around €10m.

The youngster had grown impatient at Manchester City and the English club had little choice other than trying to get the best deal available.

Since then Sancho has had the success he may well have expected. Not only is he a regular in the Dortmund team, but he’s also earned himself a new contract and broken into Gareth Southgate’s squad. Things are very bright for the youngster, who is still just 18 years of age.

Manchester City may regret some aspects of the situation, but what they won’t regret is getting themselves a clause on the player’s future. These clauses are often vague, sometimes purposely so, and, following recent reports about the City clause, BVB’s Michel Zorc has had his say.

Speaking in a press conference on Thursday, and quoted by Fussball Transfers, the Dortmund chief said: “Basically, we do not disclose any contract details. But in this case, Manchester City would have a maximum of matching rights.”

That means they’d have the chance to match any acceptable offer for the player.

Zorc said he doesn’t think the clause is relevant because his club would have to agree to sell first, and they obviously plan to keep Sancho.
