Before we start writing about Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Bruno Lage being linked to a South American club, we better put some context into it.
For the past few years, Portuguese managers have been having huge success in Brazil. The last three Copa Libertadores were won by them, as Jorge Jesus first lifted the trophy with Flamengo, and Abel Ferreira was the champion of the last two editions with Palmeiras.
So now every time a big club sack their coach, there’s a hunt for a Portuguese boss. This has been happening with Corinthians recently, as the names of Jorge Jesus, Vitor Pereira and Paulo Fonseca are said to be in their wish list.
Surprisingly, a new name is in the news today. That’s Wolves’ Bruno Lage, who was suggested by an agent.
Speaking to PodcasTimão, representative Will Dantas explained that he brought the option to Corinthians president Duílio Monteiro Alves. And it turns out that the manager himself is already aware of that.
“I called Duílio and commented on a coach. It’s Bruno Lage, I met him at Benfica, when he was the club’s coach. He approved of Pedrinho when I took him to the team. I spent an hour talking to the guy while Pedrinho did the exams”, said Will Dantas (via ESPN Brasil).
“I think that if Corinthians brought him in, he’d be a big name. Duílio said he was going to analyse it, because the world is being offered to him. He’s studying the options and he’s absolutely right. Bruno felt very flattered and was happy with the conversation, but I find it very difficult for him to leave. Today he is perhaps in the top league in the world, in the Premier League.”
Of course it would be quite impossible for Corinthians to land Lage these days. Both because of money, as Brazilian clubs can’t get close to what is paid in the Premier League, and due to the sporting relevance that each country has.
Still, it seems the Timão have at least made some kind of contact for the 45-year-old, and he didn’t mind the attention.
