Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen has insisted he had no problems with the rotation policy under Roberto de Zerbi, nor is he particularly bothered by his departure from the club.
The Netherlands goalkeeper has been speaking to Sport Nieuws about life at Brighton and his rise to number one for his country.
The youngster has enjoyed a rapid rise over the last 18 months, first establishing himself as Anderlecht number one before moving to Brighton last summer.
He established himself with the Seagulls from there but was at no point the definitive, undisputed number one this season, with Roberto de Zerbi continually rotating between the Dutchman and Jason Steele.
That was a part of his general rotation policy, with the Italian manager regularly rotating his squad throughout the campaign as Brighton competed in the Premier League and Europe.
Fortunately for Verbruggen that did not have a negative effect on his international hopes, with Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman picking him this summer and starting him in the win over Poland and France.
Unlike De Zerbi, he appears to have made his choice and is sticking with it, leading to Verbruggen being questioned on the matter and his now former club boss.
“You always have to go into a match the same way,” he said.
“Even when you’re sitting on the bench, the feeling is a bit different, but you have to recharge for when you get there.
“The situation has also taught me to just remain stoic and seize the opportunity when it comes. If that opportunity doesn’t come, you have to get over it and keep working hard.
“I look further than just the current trainer. You know that a trainer can be temporary. In general, Brighton has managed well that when a trainer leaves, the replacement fits in the same vein.
“That’s one of the reasons I wanted to go there. Now that De Zerbi is gone, I am confident that things will also work out well with the new trainer.”
