New Brighton and Hove Albion signing Mats Wieffer has admitted he chose the club this summer because of the offer of playing time, and the chance to develop as others have at the club.

The midfielder has been speaking to Feyenoord’s channels, relayed by Voetbal Primeur, about his move to Brighton this summer.

He completed a transfer last week, sealing a €30m deal after Brighton moved quickly to wrap up his signature.

The Seagulls are busy reshaping their squad this summer for new manager Fabian Hürzeler, with Wieffer one of several new signings alongside Yankuba Minteh, Ibrahim Osman and Amario Cozier-Duberry.

The club have continued their preference of signing younger players to be developed, with three of those names only 19-years-old and Wieffer 24-years-old.

Some reports and journalists in the Netherlands have questioned his decision on the move, with some believing he could have had better offers if he had waited, particularly after seeing a move to Atletico Madrid fall by the wayside in the January transfer window.

He, though, has already insisted that the offer from Brighton was too good to turn down, and has now reiterated that stance, insisting it was a case of playing time and the chance to develop.

“Well, the chance of playing time anyway,” he said when asked about his motivation for choosing Brighton.

“They have made a lot of players much better in recent years and the place to live in England is quite good. It is also nice that you already know a few boys. Not that that necessarily influences my choice, but it is of course easier.

“And Brighton has been following me for a very long time. I think they’ve been following me for a year and a half, so they know very well who I am and that that really suits them. If you put all these things together, I think this is the best choice for me.”
