Brighton & Hove Albion defender Igor Julio is today featured in a very good interview with South American outlet Premier League Brasil.
The centre-back, who’s now been with the Seagulls for a year, had a chat about his first season in English football and what’s coming next for him.
Igor was asked about former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, and had many great things to say about the manager. He also claimed that the coach would have liked to stay at the club, and it was the lack of an agreement with the board that pushed him out.
“I had the pleasure of working with De Zerbi. He’s like a father, a brother and a friend too. He always wants to get the best out of you, encourages you to always believe in your potential and makes you see football in a very simple way. I’ve learnt so much from him!
“He always made it clear to the players that he didn’t want to leave, but that it would depend a lot on the club’s management if he wanted to continue next season. I think there was no agreement between the parties and that’s why he left, but that information doesn’t reach us. He’s a very competitive guy and always wanted to compete with the big boys.”
“I did hear about the speculation, it ends up reaching us because friends tell us. But nothing official has reached me, my managers haven’t brought anything in that direction. Today, to be honest, it’s not a plan to go back to Italy, but Milan has always been a childhood dream. So I’m honoured in any case.”
And about his long-term choices, the player made it very clear that he’s planning to spend many years in English football.
“My dream is to be able to play at a high level in Brazil, at a big club. As I said, it’s not a goal right now. I’m thinking of spending my career in the Premier League, being able to experience more here, but when the time comes for me to return, I certainly want to be well and able to play for a big club in Brazil.”
Brighton paid €16m to sign Igor from Fiorentina last summer. His contract with the Seagulls runs until 2027, with an option for an extea year.
