Brighton & Hove Albion’s Yasin Ayari was involved in Sweden’s 6-0 win over Azerbaijan in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday.
The midfielder started for the Blue and Yellow and was replaced in the 51st minute due to an injury.
That’s according to Aftonbladet, who state the Brighton player suffered an injury when he clashed against Azerbaijan’s Jeyhun Nuriyev.
It’s claimed Nuriyev’s knee hit the 21-year-old’s thigh, and the latter also twisted his foot at the same time. This is when he would have picked up an ankle injury.
Ayari received treatment on the pitch but wasn’t able to continue the tie. He was replaced by Bologna’s Emil Holm.
After the match, Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson stated he wasn’t aware of the extent of the damage. The Dane also suggested the Brighton man wanted to be substituted mainly as a precaution.
“He didn’t want to take any risks. He twisted his ankle a bit, which he also did a few weeks ago. So, I don’t think it’s that bad. I spoke to him immediately when he came to the bench, and he didn’t want to take any risks,” he said, relayed by Fotbollskanalen.
The Sweden international has been featuring regularly for the Seagulls this season, with 11 appearances in all competitions. Fabian Hürzeler and his side will be hoping for Ayari can be available for selection when Brighton face AFC Bournemouth on Saturday.
