It’s no secret now that Brighton & Hove Albion missed out on the signing of Nicolas Gonzalez from Stuttgart, as despite being reportedly very close on buying the 23-year-old, it seems they lost the race to Fiorentina.
Since the first reports had claimed that the Seagulls were offering €29m for the move, while La Viola would pay €27m, there’s been a doubt if the Bundesliga club were really taking the smaller bid for the player.
And that seems to be true, as outlet Viola News features today a story with the details on this transfer, and claims that Fiorentina did not need to outbid Brighton to land the forward.
They write that the Seagulls had ‘found an agreement’ with Stuttgart and would pay an initial amount of €24m with other €5m in bonuses.
However, the player himself turned down the move and chose to wait for La Viola.
Fiorentina offered €27m and are now close on concluding the move.
The website says it’s ‘very likely’ that the transfer is done for those numbers ‘in the coming hours’.
