Brighton and Hove Albion youngster Facundo Buonanotte has admitted he instantly regretted his move to the club when he was faced with the British weather on his arrival.
The Argentine has been speaking to ESPN about his time with Brighton so far after joining from Rosario Central in a €6m deal in January.
The Seagulls had initially targeted him last summer but struggled to get a deal over the line with Rosario, whose fans resisted the idea and forced the club’s hierarchy to abandon the proposed move.
Brighton persisted, though, and eventually got their man in January, with Buonanotte becoming a regular for Roberto de Zerbi’s side between January and the end of the season.
His career has very much boomed since then, with him not only a regular for Brighton but now also a fully fledged member of Argentina’s senior side after making his debut in the recent win over Indonesia.
He’s more than happy where he is as he looks to become the latest youngster to turn into a star for the Seagulls, but he admits that wasn’t the case when he first arrived.
“I arrived in England in January, it’s windy and cold,” he said.
“With my agent we were in a hotel overlooking the sea. There was a terrible wind, which prevented us from opening the door.
“It was getting dark at three o’clock in the afternoon and I was thinking ‘Where have I gone’. I wanted to kill myself, but I didn’t say anything.
“As the months went by, I got used to it. Now I like it better. I didn’t know much about the team, but then I started to get used to it.
“We managed to qualify for the Europa League, which was the group’s objective, so I’m very happy. Now we’ll be back in a few days to prepare.”
