When the Brazilian media reported this week that Brighton & Hove Albion had failed with approaches for Abel Ferreira and Jorge Sampaoli, the main reason seemed to be that the Seagulls couldn’t offer these managers a chance to actually win something.
The Palmeiras boss continues to fight for the biggest titles in South America, while the Argentine, who recently left Marseille after qualifying for the Champions League, is looking for an attractive project.
It turns out that as Paulo Vinícius Coelho, one of the best sports journalists in Brazil, publishes a column on Folha de São Paulo, he explains that money has also been an issue for the coaches to turn Brighton down.
Sampaoli’s staff, meanwhile, confirmed Brighton’s approach, even though English sources denied it. And agents claimed the coach is building a house in Buzios, a city near Rio de Janeiro, while he dreams of taking charge of Flamengo.
The journalist then learned that Flamengo can pay Sampaoli a little more than the Seagulls. In the case of Abel Ferreira and Palmeiras, the Premier League side could only pay half of what he earns there.
With the cost of living in Brazil being a lot lower than in England, it’s obvious that it’s much more lucrative for both managers to continue living in South America. Since both clubs can offer them chances of winning big things, it’s hard for Brighton to bring convincing arguments to the table.
