It’s been a while since Chelsea were heavily linked to Santos midfielder Thiago Maia. The rumour was quite strong after the Olympics last year, when an approach from the Blues was reported by the Brazilian press.
Out of nothing, the transfer seems likely again, due to two different stories on Tuesday. Firstly there’s Brazilian website UOL claiming Santos are planning to sell two young stars, with Thiago being one of them.
The outlet recalls that Chelsea and PSG were once interested, besides a Russian club. However, no official offers have ever got to Santos.
Speaking to UOL, Santos president Modesto Roma confirmed that some members of the squad will be on their way out this year: “Santos should probably sell some players, it is part of the financial planning of the club.”
Then there was also a rumour out in the English press claiming Chelsea and Manchester United will be battling PSG for the 20-year-old this summer, as he would be available for about £16m.
Thiago Maia changed agents after the Olympics and now works with Giuliano Bertolucci, who was responsible for several deals with Chelsea in the past.
In case the stories are related, this is interesting stuff.
