It’s no secret that Newcastle United have, for a long time, been interested in signing Lucas Paqueta from Lyon, but it’s also clear that the Magpies haven’t found it easy to sign the player.
Today, outlet UOL features a story about the difficulties that Eddie Howe’s side are having to land the midfielder.
There, columnist Rafael Reis points out that despite Newcastle’s take over, the new owners still can’t inject that much money during the first season. Wwith Lyon demanding a big fee for the transfer, the Magpies are having a hard time.
What’s probably more interesting in this story are the claims that besides the struggle to find a deal with the French side, the St. James’ Park club also have another issue, which is convincing the player about the move.
Paquetá is said to be interested in playing in the Premier League, but would rather sign for a club who can ‘immediately’ give him the chance of fighting for titles. That’s why he was more excited about approaches from Arsenal and Manchester City.
Those clubs, however, reportedly ‘gave up’ on the signing. Newcastle, who are said to be ‘the option he wanted the least’ of the three, are the one left, even though recent reports have been including West Ham United in the race as well.
