While Tottenham Hotspur fans wait for Cristian Romero to rejoin the squad and prove himself in his first season with the club, the defender continues to be well rated in South America.

Brazilian legend Cafu spoke to Omnicom Pr Group today, and was quizzed about the young players who have been impressing him in international football.

The former Milan fullback chose the Tottenham player as one of those who did best at the Copa America, in which Argentina were crowned champions after beating Brazil at the Maracanã Stadium.

“There are several young players who deserve to be highlighted,” said Cafu (via Mundo Deportivo).

“For Brazil, I was impressed by Lucas Paquetá, for example. Also the Colombian Luis Díaz, MVP of the tournament, and Cristian Romero, from Argentina, who had a very good game in the final.”

With so many midfielders and attacking players excelling in South American football, it’s undoubtedly quite interesting to see Cafu highlighting a centre-back.

The 51-year-old still highlighted the importance that the Copa America has for players, which may also be a message for those who’ve been discrediting international football for the past few days.

“This summer’s Copa America showed us the importance of great international tournaments even for the best players. Although the club is important, competing for your country against the best is always special. Messi and Neymar are superstars, but when you see their emotions after the whistle in the final, it shows you how much this match meant for them. I think that in the end Argentina were the fair winners.”
