David Luiz’s excellent free-kick on Tuesday night didn’t only catch Liverpool by surprise, but also his Chelsea  teammates, who weren’t expecting it.

Speaking to ESPN Brasil after the 1-1 draw at Anfield, Brazilian midfielder Willian spoke about what happened: “He said get out, get out, and came running because he wanted to take it. It also caught the goalkeeper by surprise because he imagined I’d take it.

“So he was kind of not knowing it, David came and took it, surprised him and scored a golaço. If he hadn’t scored, he would get a scolding from me, but he did!”

David Luiz, who played his 100th game for Chelsea last night, was happy to hit the landmark: “Celebrating with a goal is even better. Not all the people have the chance to play for big clubs. I have this opportunity so I thank God every day, just like today, all the honour, all the glory, should be given to him.”

Asked to comment on his goal, Luiz also credited it to someone else: “God is good. Every time.”

Questioned about the injury which bothered him during the game, the Chelsea defender revealed he’s been carrying it for a while: “I’ve been feeling my knee for some time, I’ve been playing a bit impaired, but it’s all part of football. It’s ok, we’ll treat it now and rest for Saturday’s game.”

David Luiz’s good performances with Chelsea have obviously been making people wonder if he’ll ever get back to the Brazilian national team. Even though he hasn’t been called up since 2015, he claims a return is still on his mind: “I always think about it. It’s a pride and a pleasure to defend my country, that’s why I play football, and if it happens, let God’s will be done.”
