When speaking of South American football, it’s hard to think of someone who’d turn down the chance of having a job at Manchester United.

But it seems it happened recently, as according to reports from Brazil, Grêmio official Thiago Gomes has rejected a position at the Red Devils.

As reported by Zero Hora, Manchester United offered him a job to be a scout in South America, and that was turned down by the official.

Gomes is currently an assistant coach at Grêmio. He mostly works with what they call the ‘transition squad’, which is midway between the academy and the first team.

His work has been very much praised at the club, and that’s why he’s been working on several roles, including as a caretaker manager for a few matches when Renato Gaúcho was sacked last month.

Since it looks like Gomes has a future as a manager ahead of him, it makes sense for him to turn down a scouting job and continue his path at one of the biggest clubs in Brazil.

It’s also no surprise to see Manchester United looking for more manpower in South America. The new work permit rules makes it easier for Premier League sides to sign players who feature in the Copa Libertadores, so watching young talents is that competition is certainly a job which will grow.
