The goalkeeper situation at Milan is a very interesting one.
We aren’t talking about Gianluigi Donnarumma for once, but what happens behind him, since Pepe Reina was sent on loan to Aston Villa to get first-team football only for Asmir Begović to arrive on a temporary deal from AFC Bournemouth to fill the void.
The Bosnian had only just returned from a loan spell at Qarabag in Azerbaijan and found himself quickly shipped off to Italy, where he made two appearances before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Now, with loan deals nearing their end, decisions will need to be made, and Calciomercato seem to hint Begović could end up staying longer than this season.
They state the Bournemouth player has ‘convinced’ Milan that he is a ‘reliable’ goalkeeper, but a lot will depend on what happens with Pepe Reina and Alessandro Plizzari.
The Spaniard immediately became the number one under Dean Smith at Villa Park, and the player was enjoying himself, even if results weren’t quite going his and his team’s way.
As for Plizzari, the young goalkeeper was sent to Livorno in Serie B to get some minutes under his belt, which he did.
With Reina unlikely to want to return to Milan to be a backup and Begović seemingly happy with that exact situation there, it’s almost a no brainer.
The only issue would be to find the ex-Liverpool goalkeeper a new club in the summer, and we’ll have to wait and see if Villa will be keen to make the move permanent down their end.
