With two goals and one assist in five games, former Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn may have good stats since his for Ajax this season, but he’s still not a darling of the Dutch media.
The Amsterdam side were defeated 3-1 by Twente at the weekend, and as Wim Kieft talks about the team problems, there’s some criticism towards the 25-year-old.
In quotes relayed by Soccer News, the pundit points out that Ajax paid Tottenham a pretty good amount for the signing, and Bergwijn perhaps needs to take some responsibility rather than whining about others.
“But then Maurice Steijn and Bergwijn call out that there is something lacking in the effort. Those guys have absolutely no idea what to do. On the one hand, because they are not good footballers (the ones the pair have criticised) on the other hand they don’t even know how Ajax wants to play football,” said Kieft.
“Bergwijn shouts after the match that he is done with it and wants to see passion. But he doesn’t touch a ball himself, man! He was bought for so much money… You’re not going to make fun of those guys and let them down, are you? The great shoving off has started at Ajax.”
Back in January 2020, Tottenham spent €20m to sign Bergwijn from PSV. During his time with Spurs, he had eight goals and ten assists in 83 appearances.
The winger barely played in his last season in London, but still held a high prestige in the Netherlands. That’s why Ajax spent over €31m to get him signed last year. This season, they made him their captain, and that only raises expectations around him, even though the criticism from the local media is still there.
