Everton interest in Ralf Rangnick was always somewhat curious. Working for RB Leipzig in a sport director role, moving to Goodison Park as a manager seemed an odd proposition.
With Steve Walsh in place at Everton, working with Rangnick, a man who in recent years has built up his own targets and contacts, wouldn’t have made the most sense.
Given all of that, supposed interest from the Premier League club was never really taken seriously in Germany. That there were far more column inches in England published on the potential move, even with Everton having a whole list of linked managers, told its own story.
Now the links should come to an end, with RB announcing on Sunday evening that Rangnick has extended his contract by two years, on a deal which now takes him to 2021.
This certainly doesn’t seem like Rangnick using Everton interest to get himself a new deal, although the rumours may have pushed RB to act a little more quickly.
