During the winter transfer window, Sheffield United made attempts to sign Jonjoe Kenny from Hertha Berlin.
The right-back, who turned 28-years-of-age in March, has been with the German club since 2022, when he arrived from Everton. Despite the Toffees offering a renewal at that time, the defender instead decided to try his luck in German football.
Towards the end of January, it was reported Sheffield United had reached a verbal agreement with Kenny for a move in the winter market. There was then pressure on Hertha Berlin to agree a cheap deal, because the player’s contract expires at the end of June.
Friday’s edition of Bild reports Hertha Berlin rejected a six-figure offer from Sheffield United in January, prepared to then lose the player for nothing.
The assumption was that the Blades would be promoted and Kenny could then move to Yorkshire as a free agent this summer. Unfortunately that hasn’t been the case and Sheffield United remain in the Championship.
Bild describe this as ‘bitter news’ for Kenny, who has to change his plans. Borussia Monchengladbach are interested and that would provide a tempting opportunity for the player, who had wanted to return to the Premier League.
