Liverpool cult hero Maxi Rodríguez has admitted he was surprised to receive a call from the club to feature in their recent legends clash with Barcelona.
The Reds recently hosted a clash with the Catalan giants at Anfield during the international break, with legends from both sides meeting to raise money for the LFC Foundation.
Rodriguez was part of the Liverpool squad that involved the likes of Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Jerzy Dudek and Luis Garcia.
The Argentine spent a very happy two years at Anfield between 2010 and 2012, joining on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid in January 2010.
He went on to make 73 appearances for Liverpool in that period, scoring 17 goals and registering seven assists, as well as being a part of the side that won the League Cup in 2012.
He remains a firm fan favourite, hence his return for this legends game, although he admits he was surprised to receive the call from Anfield.
“It came as a bit of a surprise to me, not long after I retired,” he told TyC Sports.
“It was two very nice invitations, enjoying it all. We played Barcelona legends against Liverpool legends, and I got to play as a five-a-side player. There was Gerrard, Kuyt, Milan Baros.
“Playing in front of a full house, feeling the warmth of the Liverpool fans again, which is very special, through something very nice, it created a spectacular atmosphere.”
